What an informative and fun video!!! Is it truly that absurdly simple? Obviously the video was shot a while ago and things have changed with the added binders in the pills these days but would this process still hold up today?
I just attempted the Moscow route for the first time and it was a bit disappointing to me..But that being said, I am a bit of a novice and this was my first foray after purchasing some basic organic chemistry glassware and hotplate etc..
A question if I may...Why is sodium thiosulfate used in the moscow route reaction?
and is it possible for excess sodium hydroxide and sodium thiosulfate to migrate into the toluene with the methamphetamine oil?

1. In the video, how much is the temperature of mixing red phosphorus, iodine and ephedrine for an hour and a half?
2. Sodium thiosulfate is not used in the video. Red Devil Lye What is this? Are they a substitute? If not, what about using sodium thiosulfate?
3. Sulphuric acid cannot be bought in my country. Can HCL gas be replaced by HCL solid?

I just looked at my hydrochloric acid bottle and the concentration says 37.4% so it is not super concentrated. and since I am still learning, I am just doing small scale reactions..I put about 1 tablespoon of calcium chloride in an empty rinsed out shampoo bottle with a small hose attached and add just enough acid to cover calcium chloride and shake gently..In about a minute it generated enough gas by squeezing bottle to precipitate crystals...and since there is no pressure to speak of, I just fold the tubing over when I am finished and leave it outside...it seems to remain active for about a week or so to be re used...
I am just a beginner but maybe this helps you a bit.

Just a quick question..Does acetone dissolve any psuedoephedrine when used to was red coating off of pills? And does it actually work to wash ground up pills and rid them of the coating?

I think that (HCl+H20)+Al ( I assume by tin foil you mean aluminum foil)

Sulfuric acid dehydrates Hydrochloric acid releasing hydrogen chloride gas, calcium chloride is also a drying agent. It may be possible to just heat hydrochloric acid to produce HCl gas, but I'm not positive
You can either use ephedrine hcl or pseudo ephedrine hcl...Reason being that it is a water based reaction so the material must be water soluble. Pretty sure all decongestant pills are hcl so as to be able to be absorbed in the body.

Hi..If you check out William Dampier Methamphetamine from pills post, you can use the Moscow Route which is the same synthesis as the one in the video..It is what you would use to keep things safe so to speak..But you do need some proper glassware such as round bottom flask, electric heat source and condenser tube..It is a very easy to follow synthesis..Hope that helps.

Hey hey..I just wanted to throw this link out there for anyone interested..I know its a bit older but it works quite well for extracting pseudo freebase from most pills, including the red coating...I think it pulls out a pretty clean freebase but Im not an expert! Its also relatively easy for the 'kitchen chemist' in my opinion...

Yes, you can follow this method. Do you have pseudoephedrine free base or hydrochloride? I can't say for sure which way would be more commercially effective. There are a lot of aspects, which have influence on the price. I guess, BMK way would be cheaper.

In the last step, hydrogen chloride gas is passed into the toluene extraction solution, and some transparent crystalline substances are obtained in the wall of the beaker, unlike the white powder in the video. I simply can't stand the pungent smell of hydrogen chloride gas. When the toluene solution is poured out at the end, there is still a small amount of yellow oily liquid at the bottom of the beaker.
