Shake n Bake synthesis of meth is an one pot reaction, which makes it easier to execute, but can be dangerous while doing by newbies. So, if you are not used to do experimental procedures, DO NOT TRY IT! I recommend going deeper in reagents infos, like boiling point, flash point, reaction enthalpy and others. I also recommend to study similar apparatus reactions, to better understand what is going on. Understanding the mechanism is also a strong recommendation. More informations right here:

Note: this reaction produces a lot of heat, so it is necessary to put the recipient in contact to liquid nitrogen bath or even dry ice/ethanol bath to maintain the temperature. I do not recommend using a normal ice bath, to avoid the violent reaction with water if something goes wrong (like your round-bottom flask breaks, for example).

I had to update my rating. 20 years ago I saw a black Labrador killed as he ran up to a cooking mason jar which popped. Even thick walled boiling flasks are only rated to 60 psi@100°C. This reaction could easily exceed 120 psi. THINK TWICE DON'T DIE. Do not attempt this reduction in a glass container of any kind. The ER doctor isn't stupid, he knows an explosion drove that chunk of glass a 1/2" into your femur. Your femur if you are lucky. Let me know if you find any ammonium nitrate coldpacks, they started adding calcium to them about 15 years ago so boneheads couldn't make meth with them. I personally like balanced stoiciometric reactions. You could end up with nothing, 50% unreacted pseudo, a fairly dirty completish reaction or a burning house with this scheme

Right so the Shake & Bake is essentially the famous Birch reduction, aka: aka: a classic 'cold cook', aka: the ammonia and lithium method. When this method mass proliferated across the U.S. circa 1996-1999, the source of anhydrous ammonia was tubing coming from an anhydrous ammonia tank, and passing through a calcium carbonate filter to keep the ammonia very dry. With the S&B, cold freezer packs containing ammonium nitrate are used instead to exploit the ammonia in the ammonium nitrate.

This could use some illustrations to help people picture what's meant and being explained here. Also, there are a few safety things to consider. 1.) using round-bottom, sodium borosilicate glass flasks with 24/40 (or 24/29) ground-glass joints is a superior set of glassware and this can be easily obtained from your favorite auction site or similar. Make a hobby out of amateur perfume and cologne making.

Or another notion is that, after the reaction has taken place and it begins to warm up, ammonia is going to become a gas as it approaches room temperature, and it expands quickly and gives off a telltale smell. Instead of this, keep the system sealed tight and vent it out of one single hose that terminates in a bucket containing dilute HCl acid or any other acid, really, as it will harmlessly produce ammonium hydrochloride, which is water-soluble and stays in the water rather than going up in the air.
