Is a hand vacuum pump enough for most Buchner filtrations?

I’d like to get a proper vacuum pump eventually, but they are a little out of my price range for the experimental scale I am working in.

Would a hand powered vacuum pump work okay for small scale synthesis? If not, why?

I would only be using this for filtrations for now, would like to vacuum distill sometime in the future, but I would like more experience with other chemical processes before I buy more shit

On 2nd thought, I may have found one. I would need a cold trap still (have little idea about these just yet) would this suffice?

I tried Chinese made vaccuum pump designed for medical equipment 4L per 1min. It works but could be better.
As I know some people modify car compressor that used for tyres. Modification is not complicated at all: you just need to add an extra valve.

Great stuff!

I think what I’ll end up doing using that Amazon pump I linked to for filtrations until it gives out and then I’ll probably use a water aspirator in a bucket of water with a water pump. seems like a decent way to go about this in a clandestine setting.

Nurdrage on YouTube has a good video on it here:

That's what I use for many applications. It mostly works fine but be wary of the intended use and remember that water vapors will saturate the system

There is another problem with DCM, petroleum ether (for sure) and probably some other substances. They easily degrade certain types of plastic and rubber. So, if such pump as aspirator and my works with such substances for the long time (20 minutes and more), it will be damaged for sure.

The 200$ vacuum pumps from Amazon work perfect for me :)
You simply fill them with a littl vacuum oil (watch out to purchase the right one) and it's ready to go

After spending hours trying to get things dry with a manual pump for my Buchner funnel, I finally spent 60–70 euros on a cheap electric pump that I filled with the lightest motor oil I could find. It works well, but it does become warm and there are obviously filtration-related fumes running through it, so I treat it as disposable. At some point, it will surely stop working, but presumably the oil is providing some chemical protection in the meantime.

Good investement :) Those pumps NEED to be treated as disoposable, mine is smelling like Amines like freaking crazy and I can't get rid of that smell.. :D :D
As for the oil, I would recommend oil dedicated for vacuum pumps - it will make the pump live longer!!

Although I haven't put it through anything particularly strenuous thus far, I may need to drain it and replace it. Perhaps I should boil some HCl and filter to hear how loud it screams.

Wait until you are going to put it to heavy work then :D I am using those cheap pumps too, they will last and are quite durable but damn, they almost explode :D :D

Vevor is king :) What would we clandestine chemists do without them

They have a joint 24/40 extremely rare to find. Have you seen in the EU any adapters or some glass items that can be used as spares in case some part is broken?

No I have not but what machine are you exactly talking about? The Vevor Rotovap?

I got this one too and it's my biggest nightmare to have to replace broken parts there..luckily nothing has happened so far

Rotavap, Distillation kit, for example. All of them are built on 24/40. I know, there are different adapters on the market, but I haven't seen any for 24/40. Probably, it is Aliex realm.

Aliexpress is also the only place that came to my mind.
Maybe some custom made glassware too but that's probably too expensive and in most cases it would make more sense to re-purchase the whole machine.

For those reasons I also will not purchase distillation kits/rotovaps from Vevor anymore, I will work with my EU supplier as the prices are very similar and the replacement of small parts is easily possible.w
