Are my calculations for the synthesis of 4-methylpropiophenone good, ? Can you please take a look, I will make the synthesis tomorrow.
* Toluene:** 500 mmol * 3 = 1500 mmol (This is about 162 g or 162 mL. The density of toluene is about 0.87 g/mL).
* Aluminum Chloride (AlCl₃):** 550 mmol * 3 = 1650 mmol (This is about 220 g.)
* Propionyl Chloride:** 525 mmol * 3 = 1575 mmol (This is about 147 g or 140 mL. The density of propionyl chloride is about 1.05 g/mL).
* Dichloromethane:** 200 mL * 3 = 600 mL (The amount of solvent should also be increased.)
* **Ice Water:** 500 mL * 3 = 1500 mL
**5% NaOH:** 300 mL (3 x 100 mL)
* Water (for washings):** 300 mL (3 x 100 mL)
Remove the decanter at 40 degrees Celsius.
