I'm speaking about my personal situation only. THIS IS NOT ADVISE! For most people I think Heisenberg is on point, and obviously he knows a lot about this subject.
Tolerance is something I have to deal with to continue to receive a benefit from the meds I take. I have a doctor I work with and this is what I do right now.
My Situation:
I'm prescribed a Adderall IR 20mg, 15mg, and 10mg daily, and yes you do build a tolerance to this stuff pretty quickly. Can't say I feel anything when I take my meds, but I sure feel it when I don't. Given that my daily dose totals 45mg, I'm right on that line where doctors start having to defend their actions to people, who know very little about medicine, but love to tell others what to do.
My Current Methods:
Anyway, there are a few things I do with advisement from my doctor:
- Be smart with dosage, think about what who need to do today and dose accordingly. Examples: Some days I just take the minimum does to not withdrawal, but if I have something important going on I'll take full dose, and sometimes slightly more. Basically take what you need when you need it.
- There are supplements as mentioned above. personally I take L-Tyrosine and Magnesium in addition to a daily
- This last one is prescribed twice a day for me. Auvelity is a very unique anti-depressant medication (which works out because I also have depression); Basically it's a combination of Dextromethorphan (DXM) and Bupropion (Wellbutrin), both of these, DXM especially, tend to lower your stimulant tolerance. I'm not saying run out and get Auvelity, but a little DXM every few days could help with maintaining current tolerance level
For Emphasis:
This is what my doctor and I are experimenting with. I can report that for me it seems somewhat effective.
However, once again, I think the best advice came from Heisenberg, which is to take pauses.
